Here is an example of an unhealthy & healthy skin microbiome. The skin’s microbiome is an ecosystem that is made up of billions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The skin microbiome in the follicle is composed of a diverse group of microorganisms. The primary role of the skin is to serve as a physical barrier, protecting our bodies from potential assault by foreign organisms or inflammatory substances such as acne causing bacteria. It is essentially the skin’s first line of defence against bad bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can lead to acne. On our face especially, where there are more bad bacteria than good, acne develops and this is problematic for achieving clear skin. A balanced skin microbiome is vital for healthy, clear, acne free skin.

The function of AHA & BHA in our mask and cleanser

AHA's aka alpha-hydroxy-acids

Our Mask & Cleanser include both AHAs (Glycolic, Citric, Mandelic and Azelaic acid) that help to treat and prevent recurring acne. Acne pimples occur when your pores are clogged with a combination of dead skin cells, oil (sebum), and especially bacteria. Exfoliating with AHAs can help loosen and remove the clog and remove acne causing bacteria. Continued use may also prevent future clogs from forming. AHAs may also reduce the size of enlarged pores, which are commonly seen in acne-prone skin. Skin cell turnover from exfoliating glycolic and lactic acids can even reduce acne scars. Citric and mandelic acids, help to soothe inflamed skin.

BHA aka beta-hydroxy-acid

Our Mask & Cleanser include both a BHA-Salicylic acid that finds application in treating almost all aspects of the skin. Additionally, BHA can target all the links in the acne-causing chain of cause and effect, making it one of the best ingredients for acne prevention. BHA treatments are typically used for clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, acne, cysts. BHA treats acne by working deep within the pore by reducing swelling, redness and releasing blocked pores to allow breakouts to diminish.
