The Best Routine for Acne Prone Skin

The Best Routine for Acne Prone Skin

Almost everyone experiences some form of acne in their lifetime, whether it’s a breakout, occasional pimples or oily skin that’s prone to inflammation. Thankfully, with the right products, lifestyle changes and a consistent skincare routine with the right products and formulations, acne can be easy to treat. Read on to learn how.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

What exactly is acne? Generally, acne refers to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cystic acne, which results from pores becoming clogged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Many factors can cause acne, ranging from hormones to genetics, to your diet and stress.

OUR THREE PRINCIPLES:

We believe there’s a magic trilogy when it comes to discovering your most radiant skin.

1.) OUTER CARE - The external surface traditionally known as ‘skincare’.

2.) INNER NOURISHMENT - Internal vitality cultivated through our intake of vitamins, antioxidants, proteins and good fats.

3.) MENTAL WELLBEING - A mindful state of being, an awareness of how our emotional lives impact our overall health, including, of course, our skin’s.

HOW TO PREVENT & CLEAR ACNE USING OUR OUTER CARE PRINCIPLE?

It’s important to have a consistent morning and evening skincare routine and to make sure that you’re using formulas with the right ingredients. Seek clean skincare products containing; alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA's) to remove dead skin cells; and salicylic acid (BHA) to kill acne-causing bacteria and to reduce inflammation. It is also significant to use skincare that contains calming ingredients such as chamomile and aloe vera to soothe acne-prone skin and further calm inflammation.

HERE'S OUR STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ESTABLISHING A SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

Step 1: Gently cleanse (morning & night)
Cleansing is important for treating acne, but there are some things to take into consideration when choosing a cleanser:

🖤 Wash your face with warm water.

🖤 Choose a gentle formula to prevent over drying of the skin.

🖤 Avoid harsh exfoliants, which can irritate the skin.

For having the most efficient cleansing experience we recommend our: Purify & Comfort Face Cleanser

Step 2: Use a toner (morning & night)
Using a toner is an optional step in your skincare routine; however, it can help to further remove excess oil and impurities that cause acne, and prepare the skin for any serums and moisturizer. If you do decide to use one, make sure it’s formulated for sensitive skin and is free of oils, fragrances, and silicons which may irritate already sensitized skin. Dab onto a cotton pad or our reusable face cleansing pads and spread evenly across the skin after cleansing. We an effortless removing experience we recommend our: Reusable Face Cleansing Pads

Step 3: Moisturize (morning & night)
No matter what form of acne you have, it’s important to moisturize both day and night. Acne-prone skin needs to be balanced, and moisturizing helps the skin retain the right amount of hydration to prevent it from producing too much oil. Keep the following in mind for your daily moisturizing routine:

🖤 In the morning, opt for an oil-free moisturizer and apply a mineral sunscreen on top to keep your skin hydrated and protected from harsh UV rays. Since acne-prone skin is already sensitized, a mineral SPF (vs chemical) won’t irritate the skin.

🖤 At night, opt for an oil-free moisturizer that won’t clog pores. Gel moisturizers or those with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (which help to attract and retain moisture on the skin) are suitable options. For having the perfect balanced hydration experience we recommend our: Calm & Hydrate Oil-Free Moisturizer

Step 4: Mask (Weekly)
Treating your skin with a weekly mask formulated with potent acne-fighting and soothing ingredients can do wonders for your skin and is worth the extra step! If you’re using prescribed acne products, however, check with your dermatologist first to make sure the formulas will be right for your skin. Acne masks can soothe and minimize breakouts by decreasing the inflammation involved in the papules and pustules. As the formula sits on the skin longer, it’s able to work on a deeper level within the pore, and have a greater effect on the top layer of the skin as well. For a weekly exfoliation we recommend our: Clarify & Brighten Face Mask

TIPS TO INCORPORATE OUR INNER NOURISHMENT & MENTAL WELL-BEING PRINCIPLES INTO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

Now that you have your acne skincare routine down, here are a few additional tips for keeping acne at bay:

🖤 Avoid touching and picking at your breakouts, as this can cause bacteria to spread, as well as increasing inflammation and risk of scarring.

🖤 Nourish yourself with healthy food as this plays a huge role on your skin health. Drinking water and consuming more greens and vegetables can have a very positive impact. Limit dairy products and foods high in processed sugars, as these are known to cause acne flare-ups.

🖤 Be mindful of your stress level. Stress causes poor blood circulation and inflammation, and is thus known to trigger acne. Try to take some time out each day to relax and unwind.
